Amazing in Value

Psalm 19:7-14
In verses 1-6, David stood amazed at God’s creation and he said that it all pointed to the Creator. In verses 7-14, he describes God’s amazing Law. God reveals Himself more fully and intimately through His Word.
In these verses we see The Magnificence of the Word, The Value of the Word, The Power of the Word in our lives, and The Right Response to the Word.
The Magnificence of the Word
God's Word is
  • Perfect - God’s Law is perfect. I am not. You are not. But God’s Word is. Everything about God’s Word is perfect.
  • Sure - It will never change. It will never be out of date or irrelevant for our lives.
  • Right - I can depend on what God tells me through His Word to always be right. It is never wrong.
  • Pure - In a day when our food is often tainted, how good to know that God’s spiritual food for the soul is always pure.
  • Clean- Because it is perfectly clean, it can cleanse our hearts (Ps. 119:9, 11)
  • True- People may lie to us. Our own hearts may deceive us, but God’s Word is true and it points us to the One who is The Truth.
  • Righteous altogether - God’s Word is the Standard for right and wrong, good and bad, better and best.

The Value of God’s Word
It is

  • More desirable than gold- It is true a treasure for one’s heart, soul and life.
  • Sweeter than honeycomb- Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words became a delight to me and the joy of my heart, for I am called by Your name, Lord God of Hosts. Jeremiah 15:16 (HCSB)

The Power of the Word in our lives and God’s Word

  • It restores the soul- God’s Word turns me from sin and renews my mind
  • It makes me wise- I have more insight than all my teachers because Your decrees are my meditation. Psalms 119:99 (HCSB)
  • It makes the heart glad- Do you delight in God’s Word? Does it make your heart glad to study it and meditate on it? Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. Psalms 119:111 (NIV)
  • It gives us light- Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalms 119:105 (NIV)
  • It warns me of sin, foolish decisions, and of the hidden snares of secret sins

The Right Response to the Word
How do you respond to God’s Word. Meditating on God’s Word drew David closer to the Lord. It prompted his prayer life:

  • God’s Word reveals the hidden things of the heart. David agreed with what God’s Word showed him.
  • He prayed, “Cleanse me of secret sins and all the lurks inside me that is wrong.”
  • “Keep me from presumptuous sins, willful sins”
  • “Do not let me be controlled by them”
  • “And Lord, may my words and thoughts be acceptable to you, Lord.”
  • David said, “Lord, I just want to acknowledge that Your are my Rock and my Redeemer.”

What is our attitude toward and response to the Scriptures—God’s written Word?
