One of the saddest words I know is the word "worthless." Worthless means that something has no value. It is useless. Of course, sometimes worth is in the eye of the beholder. What is worthless to one person, may be of great value to another. Usually we use the word worthless in connection with inanimate things. Any number of things can be useless. Some information is useless. Many actions are without any value or worth. Sometimes, the word is used with reference to individuals. But if people are created in God's image, can anyone be truly worthless?
What is saddest of all is when someone has become convinced that he or she is worthless. Perhaps they have been hurt or rejected. Maybe they were told by someone who was an authority figure that they would never amount to anything. Some people feel worthless because they have been the victims of abuse -- whether sexual, physical or emotional. Many people who suffer from some type of addiction come to think of themselves this way. Repeated failures and relapses into sinful behavior convinces them that they have no worthless and hopeless. When a sense of worthlessness is acute, it can lead to suicde. The person reasons that others would be better off without him.
How wonderful to know that God never considers us worthless. In His eye you have great value. And He paid an infinte price for you so that you could be His possesssion. His child and be transformed into His masterpiece.
But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us! Romans 5:8 (HCSB)
For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live]. Ephesians 2:10 (AMP)That's why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good. God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son. The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him. After God made that decision of what his children should be like, he followed it up by calling people by name. After he called them by name, he set them on a solid basis with himself. And then, after getting them established, he stayed with them to the end, gloriously completing what he had begun. So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn't hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn't gladly and freely do for us? Romans 8:28-32 (MSG)
